Starfish Market: A leader in reducing single-use plastic!

The team working on building a Plastic Free Island: St. John innovation project could not have been more thrilled to learn that Starfish Market made the following announcement on April 16. It came as we on-island and deep in community meetings, forensic coast tours and making local friends. Some thought we might have had something to do with the news. Nope. This is simply another example of an enlightened business that's taking a leadership role. We salute this wonderfully mindful merchant.

ST. JOHN - Starfish Market and Starfish Gourmet & Wines announced today that they are rolling out a new environmental initiative. The stores will no longer be using plastic bags for groceries and will make the switch on Earth Day – April 22, 2016. The stores are currently the only ones on the island that will only be using paper bags going forward.

Nedra Ephraim, Store Manager states, “With this new environmental push, Starfish Market and Starfish Gourmet & Wines will be at the forefront in helping to maintain the beauty of our island and surrounding waters. We hope all of our customers will support us in this effort as we make the switch to paper bags only.”

Starfish Market will be selling reusable bags at cost starting on April 19 thru April 30. For those customers that prefer paper bags with handles, those will be sold individually at the register for $ .25
